The best cordless lawn mowers for small, medium and large UK lawns

The lawn area a maker says one charge will cut is the most useful number on a cordless mower, but owners can get less, especially in longer grass. As a cautious rule of thumb, we suggest buying for about one and a half times your lawn.

Some links in this guide are affiliate links: if you buy through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend. More on that.

The short answer

Small lawn (up to about 130m²): Bosch EasyMower 18V-32-200, or the Ryobi 18V ONE+ 33cm if you already own Ryobi batteries.

Medium lawn (about 130–360m²): Bosch UniversalRotak 2x18V-37-550 with two 4Ah batteries.

Large lawn (about 360m² and up): EGO LM1914E-SP 47cm self-propelled, if you go by UK retailers' 1,000m² figure (EGO itself gives runtime only); keep a second battery for bigger lawns. Buy a mower whose stated coverage is about 1.5 times your lawn.

Most "best cordless mower" lists rank mowers against each other. The more useful question is whether a given mower will finish your lawn on one charge, and whether its battery will run your other tools. This guide answers both from makers' specifications and from what owners say on a UK forum. If you haven't yet decided between cordless, petrol, corded and robot, start with our guide to choosing a lawn mower; the rest of our lawn care guides cover the kit around it.

The specs side by side

All figures are from the maker's UK page or a UK retailer's specification table (sources at the end). "Coverage" is the lawn area the maker or retailer says one charge will cut with the battery supplied or recommended (Bosch gives a recommended maximum lawn area rather than a per-charge figure).

Wider decks don't always mean more coverage, and sources don't always agree. EGO's own UK page describes the LM1914E-SP as a mower for medium lawns and gives only a runtime (40 minutes on the 6Ah battery); the 1,000m² figure comes from two UK retailers, Ron Smith and World of Power. EGO's page also gives two cutting-height ranges (20–80mm and 25–90mm); we've used the 20–80mm settings that Ron Smith lists. Both are reasons not to buy right at the limit.

How big a battery does your lawn need?

Work out your lawn's area in square metres, then compare it with the mower's stated coverage rather than its cutting width.

One owner in a UK Workshop forum thread (posts undated) found that longer grass cut their range well below what they normally get. That owner's Greenworks 46cm 40V self-propelled mower, run on two 2Ah batteries and pushed at a fair pace without the self-propel drive, can cut all of a roughly 500m² back garden when the grass just needs a quick trim, but only about two-thirds of it if it has been left a little long between cuts. A Makita owner with two 5Ah batteries says a charge cuts their lawn of about 75m² three or four times.

So, as a cautious rule of thumb of our own (not a measured figure), we suggest:

Multiply your lawn area by 1.5 and buy a mower whose stated coverage is at least that figure.

Your lawnCoverage to look forMowers above that fit

Over about 670m², or if you'd rather not rely on that figureMore than one chargeEGO LM1914E-SP with a second battery

These bands are narrower than the 150m² and 150–400m² bands in our lawn mower buying guide because those are about cutting width, while these build in spare battery for longer grass.

If you'd rather compare batteries directly, multiply voltage by amp-hours to get watt-hours, the energy in the pack. Don't expect area to scale neatly with it, though: makers' figures don't line up neatly. Bosch recommends the EasyMower (72Wh) for lawns up to 200m² and the UniversalRotak (144Wh) for up to 550m²; and the EGO's 336Wh (56V × 6Ah) is listed at about 1,000m² by two retailers.

Batteries: which ranges share tools?

If you'll also want a hedge trimmer, grass trimmer or blower, the battery platform matters more than the mower. One battery that fits all of them means fewer chargers and the option to borrow a pack from another tool to finish the lawn. Here is what each maker states:

  • Bosch 18V POWER FOR ALL. Bosch says its 18V battery "fits into all POWER FOR ALL ALLIANCE products", which include tools from Gardena, Husqvarna, GLORIA, Wagner, Steinel and others as well as Bosch. The UniversalRotak runs on two of these 18V batteries at once, and the EasyMower on one.
  • Ryobi 18V ONE+. Ryobi said in 2019 that every tool in the ONE+ range can be powered by any ONE+ battery ever made, including first-generation packs from the 1990s.
  • Makita 18V LXT. Makita's 38cm DLM382 mower runs on two of Makita's 18V LXT batteries at once. We haven't listed it as a pick because it was out of stock at World of Power when we checked.
  • EGO 56V. EGO says its 56V batteries are interchangeable across its entire cordless range, from 2.5Ah up to a 28Ah backpack battery.
  • Greenworks 40V. Greenworks' EU page says its Gen II 41cm mower runs on any Greenworks 40V battery. We haven't listed a Greenworks mower as a pick because we couldn't confirm the 41cm two-battery kit in stock at a UK retailer, and the retailers we checked list very different coverage for it (300m² and 800m²).
  • Stihl AK. A Stihl reply on its UK blog says all AK batteries work in all AK System tools; the same page says the range is designed for medium to large gardens and includes hedge trimmers, a grass trimmer, a blower and a scarifier. Its 46cm RMA 248 is sold without battery or charger and Stihl quotes 250m² on its recommended AK 30 battery, so a wide deck doesn't guarantee a big lawn per charge.

If you already own one of these ranges, buying the mower as a "bare tool" (no battery or charger) is usually the cheaper route, but check that your existing batteries are big enough: Ryobi's 220m² figure, for example, is for a 4Ah pack. Our garden tools guides cover other tools you might run from the same battery.

What owners complain about, and what helps

These complaints come from owners in UK Workshop's "Cordless lawnmower" thread.

"It runs out before the lawn is done." The Greenworks owner above gets all of their lawn done on short grass but only about two-thirds when it's long. Use the 1.5 times rule above, and buy two batteries (or a kit with two) for anything over a medium lawn.

"It bogs down in long grass." A Makita owner says theirs slows once grass reaches 8–10 inches, and the Greenworks owner switches to a corded mower when grass is over about 4 inches. A Kärcher owner says theirs has less torque than their old petrol mower, so they keep the cutting height up or mow more often. A mower with a high top setting helps: the Ryobi's range goes up to 90mm, and the EGO's to 80mm. Take a first pass high, then drop the deck.

"Damp grass is a problem." The same Kärcher owner reports it. Wait for the lawn to dry where you can.

"I have to wait before I can charge it." The Greenworks owner says the batteries need about 30 minutes to cool before they will start charging, then about an hour each on the charger. A second battery avoids waiting mid-mow.

"What happens when the battery dies for good?" One owner worries that the mower's life is tied to its battery. This is where a shared platform pays off: a replacement pack also serves your other tools.

"It feels plasticky." One owner says their Bosch battery mower feels plasticky and not as well made as their other Bosch POWER FOR ALL tools. Owners also praise cordless mowers for being quiet, light, easy to turn and quick to start, with no fuel or winter preparation.

How we chose

We haven't tested these mowers in person. They are chosen from makers' specifications, UK retailer listings and owner feedback, to cover each lawn size and the main battery ranges. Every model was listed on a UK maker or retailer page in October 2026. We don't pick or rank mowers by whether we earn a commission on them.

For rear rollers, mulching and rotary versus cylinder mowers, see the lawn mower features worth paying for.

Questions people ask

What is the best cordless lawn mower for a small garden in the UK?

For a lawn up to about 130m², a 32–33cm mower rated for around 200m² is enough. The Bosch EasyMower 18V-32-200 comes with its battery and charger; the Ryobi 18V ONE+ 33cm suits people who already own Ryobi batteries.

How long does a cordless lawn mower battery last per charge?

Most makers quote lawn area rather than minutes. One owner in a UK forum thread (posts undated) found longer grass cut their range well below what they normally got, so as a cautious rule of thumb we suggest buying a mower rated for about 1.5 times your lawn.

Is a higher voltage cordless mower better?

Not on its own. Battery energy (voltage multiplied by amp-hours, in watt-hours) is one factor in how much lawn you can cut, but makers' area figures per watt-hour vary, so compare the stated coverage too.

Can I use my drill batteries in a cordless lawn mower?

Yes, if they are on the same platform. Bosch 18V POWER FOR ALL, Ryobi ONE+ and Makita 18V LXT batteries fit those brands' mowers. Check the battery size: makers' coverage figures assume a particular capacity, such as 4Ah.

Why does my cordless mower struggle in long grass?

One owner on a UK forum says their Kärcher battery mower has less torque than their old petrol one. Raise the cutting height for a first pass, then lower it, and mow more often in the growing season so the grass never gets long.
